Geminate Spelling ㆀ and Morphological Analysis in Middle Korean
Abstract
Two or three initial letters could be written together in Middle Korean. The geminates (ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅉ, ㅆ, ㆅ) were used in the restricted conditions. Another unusual geminate ‘ㆀ’ can be found in the middle of a word. The occurrences of this geminate are already established in Lee, Ki-Moon(1977) and Shibu, Shouhei(1990). The geminate ‘ㆀ’ can be shown to have occurred in the C+V+j- environment in the passives and causatives. In addition, texts published in the middle of the fifteenth century only maintained the transcription convention for this geminate. From these conditions, we can find two morphological facts in Middle Korean. First, causative ptɨji- LH ᄠᅴᅇᅵ- ‘makes float’ is driven from ptɨ- L ᄠᅳ- ‘floats’. Second, the phonological shape of 지- in the causative 지ᅇᅵ- RH ‘makes carry on his back’ is tsij-. No diphthong of the shape ij was transcribed by the orthography. Nevertheless, the semivowel –j was still there, as can be seen by the orthography ‘-ᅇᅵ-’.
