한국 건축의 처마곡선 표현 언어에 관한 연구- 1960~1990년대 간행 주요 일간지를 중심으로

Abstract

한국 전통 건축의 지붕과 처마의 선이 눈에 띄는 것은 근ᆞ현대의 건축과 비교하여 지붕이 가지는 구조적, 의장적 역할이 크기 때문이다. 전근대시기 건축물에서 지붕과 처마가 도드라지는 모습은 특히 동아시아의 목조건축에서 보편적으로 나타나는 현상이다. 그러나 유사한 목구조의 원리를공유하는 동아시아에서도처마와 추녀의 구성방법에서 비롯되는 곡선의 형태나 곡률에 있어서는 각 지역만의 독특한 모습이 확인된다. 처마곡선으로 대표되는 한국 건축의 선 역시 이같은 특성에 따라 이웃한 중국, 일본과는 조금씩 다른 모습으로 발전해 왔다. 이러한 점에서 처마곡선은 한국건축만의 독창적 가치를 설명할 수 있는 좋은 소재가 되었고, 그간 근대미학의 감각적이고 심리적인 표현에 기대어 여러 관점에서 서술되어 왔다. 본 연구는 한국미에 대한 대중적 관심과 서술의 시대적 요구가 특히 강했던 1960년대로부터 1990년대까지를 분석의 시기로 삼고, 주요 일간지기사에서 확인되는 한국 건축의 처마 곡선에 대한 표현 언어를 분석하였다. 경제개발기라고도 일컬어지는 이 시기는 해방과 한국전쟁 이후 특히 조형예술에서 한국적 정체성의 요소를 찾아내고자하는 관심이 높은 때였고, 일간지는 비교적 다양한 작가집단의 표현 언어 수집과 시대상의 파악에 용이하다. 처마곡선에 대한 술어를 분석함으로써 한국 건축을 바라보는 시각과 미감의 통시적 변천과 그 변화를 추동한 시대적 필요를 가늠해볼 수 있을 것이다.

The characteristic roof and eaves of traditional Korean architecture is unique in that the roof plays a larger structural and design role compared to modern and contemporary architecture. The prominent roof in pre-modern buildings is a common phenomenon in both East and West styles, but it was particularly emphasized in East Asia, where the tradition of heavy wooden architecture is strong. In this aspect, the curved eave of Korean traditional architecture is slightly different shape from that of neighboring China and Japan. In this respect, the classic curved roof curve of Korean traditional architecture embodies the special value of Korean traditional architecture, and has been described as a sensuous and psychological expression leaning on modern aesthetics. The purpose of this study is to examine the motif and background of this description based on semiotic analysis by extracting 'predication' for the eaves curve from mass media and literature concentered on newspapers.
