- The Improvements of a Minimum Academic Achievement Policy for Student Athletes based on Discourses of Justification on Minimum Academic Achievement
- Abstract
- Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find ways to improve the minimum academic achievement policy for students based on three discourses that have supported the justification of the policy: difficulties that student athletes face in their study, the right to learn as a basic human right, and implementation of fairness.
Method: The research was carried out by literature review and analysis of collected data using the Delphi technique. In addition, the data analyzed by the Delphi technique was reviewed by a panel of experts consisting of 6 teachers, 2 leaders of the subject matter, and 1 doctoral-level expert.
Results: To help student-athletes successfully navigate the minimum academic achievement policy, 5 improvements were proposed, including developing guides to the policy; allowing students to choose the level appropriate subjects; granting students an opportunity to the choose minimum required grade; increasing the weight of attendance and academic achievement for college admissions; incentivizing class participation. Also, 3 improvements were devised to ensure the right to learn as a basic human right for student-athletes, which include: strengthening strict management and supervision for applying the minimum educational level system and guaranteeing learning hours; reorganizing the e-school and other supplementary programs; renaming the minimum education system. Finally, fairness in the minimum academic achievement policy can be secured by developing nationwide evaluation standards and tools; extending the application of the standard to students, including non-student-athletes, and establishing unwavering rules.
Conclusion: The study results stemmed from three discourses that provided good support for the efficacy of the minimum academic achievement policy on student-athletes. It is expected to make a meaningful contribution to Korea’s leap into a truly advanced sports industry.
