Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of self-assessment by comparing the scores of students and standardized patients (SP) in a clinical performance examination (CPX).
Methods: A total of 32 students enrolled in their third year of medical school who participated in CPX education were recruited. From February to April 22, a total of 15 CPX scores were used, and the SP and students’ scores were compared and analyzed.
Results: Comparison of the SP scores with the student's self-assessment scores demonstrated high self-assessment scores at all stations; furthermore, the students assigned themselves higher self-assessment scores as the number of repetitions of each station increased.
Conclusions: Research on self-assessment should be conducted continuously in order to prevent overestimation by the student in their self-assessment in the CPX. In addition, formative feedback on students' clinical performance competencies is needed during CPX.
