Abstract

Here authors would like to introduce various reports in which insole were evaluated to reduce plantar pressure and summarize the results for readers to expand their insole prescription-related knowledge and solve their worry in advance. Because individual foot of each patient is totally different in terms of biomechanics and few randomized controlled trial in high quality are reported till now, elixir-like gold standard about insole prescription cannot be achieved yet. Instead, authors wish to deliver rules of thumb about insole prescription to readers in this review; for example, custom-made insole should be preferred instead of ready-made ones. Plastazote is better than Silicon gel in case of single layer. Multiple layers composed of different insoles may, however, be superior to a single layer. The more thickness and hardness of insole materials increase, the more pressure-relieving effect in general increases. Nevertheless, variety of contributing factors, such as characteristics of insole materials, configurations and sequence of multiple layering, etc, should be determined in vey detail prior to custom-made insole prescription.
