Finite Element Analysis of Stress Distribution in the Catalyst during Canning Process of a Catalytic Converter
Abstract
본 논문에서는 자동차용 배기가스정화장치의 canning 공정중 fixture의 형상에 의해서 주어지는 다양한 loading 조건하에서의 촉매내부에 발생되는 응력분포에 대하여 유한요소법을 이용하여 조사한다.

촉매의 단면은 대칭형상이므로 단면의 1/4 영역에 대해서만 해석하고, 촉매의 변형은 평면변형율 상태로 모든 하중조건하에서 촉매내부에 발생하는 전단응력의 값을 계산하였다. 곡률 반경이 서로 다른 2개의 윤곽선이 교차되는 부분에서 최대 전단응력이 발생하고 따라서 전단응력을 기준으로 파손을 진단한다면 이 부분에서 파손될 확률이 높음을 알 수 있고, 이는 실제현장에서 canning공정중 발생하는 촉매 파손양상과 일치한다.
Stress distributions in the catalyst of an automotive catalytic converter during canning process is investigated under various loading conditions with the finite element method.

Due to symmetry, quarter part of the section was analysed, and the deformation was assumed to be in plane strain under all loading conditions considered in this study. The maximum shear stress arises in the region where the two contours with different radius of curvature intersect. It the failure of catalyst is estimated with the maximum shear stress, the probability of the failure in those regions is high, and this result coincides with the failure mode during canning process in the manufacturing shop.
