Finite Element Analysis of the Thermal Deformation in a Catalytic Converter
Abstract
자동차 배가가스 정화장치의 열변형 겨동에 관해 유한요소법을 이용하여 조사하였다. 정화장치의 축방향에 수직한 단면에 대한 2차원 유한요소모형을 구성하고 정화장치 태부의 온도분포와 열변형으 구하여, 이를 실험결과와 비교하였다. 온도분포에 대한 유한요소 해석결과와 실험결과는 비교적 잘 일치하였고 최대 오차는 약 5.7% 이었다. 이온분포를 이용하여 열변형량을 유한요소해석한 결과 정화장치 상단점에서의 열변형량은 1.46mm로서 이는 실험에 의해 측정된 최대 1.68mm과 최소 1.38mm 사이의 값으로 유한요소해석 결과가 비교적 타당하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 정화장치의 열변형에 관한 본 연구 결과로부터 정화장치 내부의 mat의 소손에 대한 원인을 일부 규명할 수 있으며, 본 연구에서 시도한 정화장치의 열변형 해석에 대한 방법이 앞으로 정화장치 mat의 소손 원인을 규명하는 연구의 기초가 될 수 있으리라 판단한다.
Thermal deformation of the automotive catalytic converter has been investigated using the finite element method. Temperature distribution and thermal deformation were calculated for the simplified two dimensional finite element model. Comparing the F.E.M. results with the experimental results shows that the F.E.M. results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The maximum error in temperature distribution is about 5.7%. The thermal expansion at the uppermost point of calalytic converter is 1.46mm and this value is in the range between 1.68 mm and 1.38 mm which are the measured values during bench test.

The reason for the erosion failure of the mat can be verified partly by the results of the presents study and the presint study can ge thought as the elementary study to veryfy the reason for the erosion failure of the mat of a automotive catalytic converter.
