「三代」考

Abstract

소설의 이해는 작품 구조와 사회의식의 상호관계에서 이루어져야 한다. 염상섭의 소설'三代'에서는 서울의 한 중산계급의 집안을 통하여 복잡다기한 당시 사회 현실에서 생겨났던 모든 갈등이 결국은 '생활'이라는 구심점으로 정리되어 가는 모습을 보여 준다. 그것은 논리를 넘어서 조화를 지향하고, 조화의 頂點에 생활은 위치한다. 빗나간 기독교인이 건전한 생활인으로 돌아올 때, 과격한 사회주의자가 의젓한 생활인으로 돌아올 때 '三代'는 결말에 이르게 된다. '三代'의 구조는 '대립→혼란→수습'의 세 단계로 이루어지는데 이러한 전개를 이끌어 가는 방향과 힘은 '혼존하던 당시 사회사상의 지양·통합에 의한 것이 아니라 '생활'이라는 구심점에서 유래하고 있다. '三代'의 이해는 작품구조의 분석을 통하여 사회의식을 확인하는 과정에서 이루어 질 수 밖에 없다.
