A Study on the Economic and Technical significance of the Puddling Process in British Iron Industry
Abstract
Manufacture 期 英國製鐵業에 있어서 製鐵生産과 關連된 文獻을 檢討하였다. Puddle爐 開發과 關連된 社會經濟史的 및 技術史的 側面에서 몇가지 重要한 問題들을 考察한 結果 아래와 같은 結論에 到達하였다.

(1) 英國製鐵業의 技術革新은 木灰不足에 起因하였다.

(2) Coke高爐의 出現에 依하여 木灰에 對한 石灰 代替의 契機가 마련되었다.

(3) 그러나 Coke高爐에서 生産되는 銑鐵로로부터 鍊鐵의 大量生産은 오직 Puddle爐의 開發과 普及에 依해서만 가능하였다.
Literature concerned with the production of wrought iron in the manufacturing period of British iron industry gas been reviewed. Some significant aspects of social economic and technical background for the development of Puddling Process have been discussed. The results are as followings.

It is considered that the technical innovation in the British iron industry has been caused by the shortage of charcoal. The substitution of coke for charcoal had been achieved by the development of the blast furnace. However, mass-production of wrought iron from pig iron produced from coke blast furnace had only been achieved by the development of the Puddling Process.
Literature concerned with the production of wrought iron in the manufacturing period of British iron industry gas been reviewed. Some significant aspects of social economic and technical background for the development of Puddling Process have been discussed. The results are as followings.

It is considered that the technical innovation in the British iron industry has been caused by the shortage of charcoal. The substitution of coke for charcoal had been achieved by the development of the blast furnace. However, mass-production of wrought iron from pig iron produced from coke blast furnace had only been achieved by the development of the Puddling Process.
