The Rainbow: D.H. Lawrence의 Doctrine의 이원성

Abstract

本 論文에서는 The Rainbow에 나타난 Lawrence의 doctrine(혹은 philosophy)의 dualism을 살펴보고, 이것이 Nietzsche의 쏟 Birth of Tragedy에 나타난 "Apollo와 Dionysus의 調和의 槪念"이라고 밝힌다. Apollo적 양상은 Lawrence의 全 批評文을 통하여 "Word", "Idea", "mental-consciousness", "male-principle", "love-mode", "Lamb"등으로 나타나고, Dionysus적 양상은 "Flesh", "blood-intimacy", "physical-consciousness", "female-principle", "power-mode", "Lion" 등으로 나타난다. 그리고 이 두 양상의 순간적인 調和가 바로 "Crown", "Rose", "Rainbow" 등으로 상징된다. 이 論文의 目的은 Apollo와 Dionysus의 調和의 槪念이 The Rainbow를 始發로 하여 Lawrence의 거의 全 作品을 일관하는 中心主題임을 밝히려는 것이다.

Lawrence에게 있어서 Nietzsche의 영향은 수수의 비평가들에 의해 論議되지 않은 바는 아니다. 그러나 그러한 언급들이 이 Apollo-Dionysus문제를 하나의 象徵 혹은 下位主題로 다루고 있음에 비해, 본 논문은 바로 이 Apollo-Dionysus 調和의 문제가 그의 다양한 主題-death-rebirth, man-woman relationship, love mode-power mode, industrialism-primitivism, modern religion-primitive ritual-들을 포괄하는 것임을 主張하려는 것이다. 論文 紙面의 제약상, 그의 doctrine이 출발하는 작품이라고 볼 수 있는 The Rainbow에서 두드러지게 드러나는 人生觀, 宗敎觀, 愛情觀만을 다루고 있으나, Apollo-Dionysus의 調和의 主題는 그의 여러 作品과 doctrine에 적용될 수 있을 것이다.

In this thesis, I study the dualism of Lawernce's doctrine(philosophy) in The Rainbow and find that the duality has the concept of "the balance between the Apollonian and the Dionysian", which is mentioned in Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy. Through Lawrence's works and critical essays, the Apollonian aspects are expressed as "Word", "Idea", "mental-consciousness", "male-principle", "love-mode", "Lamb", etc., and the Dionysian aspects as "Flesh", "blood-intimacy", "physical-consciousness", "female-principle", "power-mode", "Lion", etc.. And the momentary balance between the two is symbolized as "Crown", "Rose", "Rainbow", etc.. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that the Apollo-Dionysus balance is the central theme and conclusion of almost all works of Lawrence including The Rainbow.

The influence of Netzsche on Lawrence's works has been commented by some critics. Then they considered the Apollo-Dionysus duality as a subordinate or secondary motif or as a kind of symbol. But I try to find that his various themes-death-rebirth. man-woman relationship, love mode-power mode, industrialism-primitivism, modern religion-primitive ritual, and so on-are rather the variations of this Apollo-Dionysus dualism. Though, in this thesis, I study the dualistic doctrines of life, religion, and love cfiefly in The Rainbow, the Apollo-Dionysus theme will be applied to almost all works and doctrines of Lawrence.
