Artistic Expression and the Expansion of Consciousness by Image Information Environment
Abstract

This provides the deals with 'human = machine system' from the perspective of information theory. It is discussed how the science and technology in the late 20th century has transformed the human body function and how it has been applied in the expression of art. Especially, the artistic expression of electronic image art is discussed in the line of the expansion of the bodily senses. Two questions are raised and examined. One is to what degree the art form is possible when the expansion of information transmission function by image technology is interpreted as non-visual recognition. The other is how the art form has transformed the human consciousness. Under the hypothesis that the expansion of the body through technology is materiality as the expansion of the body (=Artificial Reality) and non-materiality as the expansion of the spirit (=Virtual Reality), image expressions that possess multi-directionalcharacteristics are analyzed in order to prove the hypothesis. It is clearly shown that they are the art of consciousness expansion
