Abstract
There are various tests used to identify exercise capacity and cardiopulmonary function in patients with respiratory diseases; cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), 6-minute walking test (6MWT), and the shuttle walking test. The CPET is the gold standard to evaluate exercise capacity, however the test is complicated and needs trained personnel, and sometimes the patients with cardiorespiratory diseases find it difficult to exercise while holding mouthpiece. The 6MWT is a self-paced test which makes it susceptible to a significant training effect, whereas the shuttle walking test is an externally paced test using a simple and easy to use 10m course. It has a high correlation with a peak oxygen consumption and is associated with the hospitalization and survival of many respiratory or cardiac patients. Although the shuttle walking test has many strengths, it has not yet been introduced to Korean hospitals. The characteristics and advantages of using shuttle walking tests (incremental and endurance) will be discussed in this review article.
