A Study on Strain Gauge Attachment Position for Valve Spring Surging Measurement
Abstract
Valve spring surge, an internal vibration phenomenon in automobile engines, significantly affects not only the fatigue life of the spring, but also the dynamic behavior of the valve train. Therefore, it is very important to accurately measure the spring surging amplitude during the valve train development process. Shear strain gauges are commonly used to measure the spring surging amplitude, but the optimum gauge attachment location varies by spring manufacturer. In this study, many experiments were conducted to resolve several disputes regarding the attachment location of the strain gauge.
Furthermore, optimal gauge attachment positions for cylindrical and beehive springs were proposed. In the case of cylindrical springs, as in the conventional method, the boundary point between the effective coils and the top-end coil is the optimum position for attaching the gauge. However, in the case of beehive springs, the optimum location depends on the mass and stiffness distributions of the conical part of the spring. Therefore, it is desirable to attach gauges to all of the boundary points: between the conical and the top-end coils, between the conical and cylindrical coils, and between the wide pitch and narrow pitch coils.
