불확실성하의 전략적 의사결정: 아산 정주영 사례를 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 경영자가 불확실성하에서 어떻게 효과적인 전략적 의사결정을 할 것인가를 아산 정주영의 실제 의사결정 사례를 통해 탐색적으로 연구한 것이다. 불확실성, 즉 과거 경험치가 없는 새로운 환경에서 회사의 명운이 걸린 의사결정을 해야 하는 경영자는 나름대로의 의사결정 기준을 잡아가는데 상당한 어려움을 겪는다. 이러한 상황에서는 전략경영에서 합리성을 근거로 한 계획학파의 설명보다는 우연성을 강조하는 소위 발생학파의 시각이 유용하다. 아산 정주영의 사례는 발생학파적인 관점에서 전략을 어떻게 수립하고 실행해 나가는가에 대한 구체적인 실증적 근거를 제공함으로써, 불확실성이 증가하고 있는 최근의 사업 환경에서 전략경영의 효과성 제고에 도움을 줄 수 있다. This paper is an exploratory study investigating how managers make effective strategic decisions under uncertainty. When managers are faced with a situation that has never been experienced, they tend to find it difficult to find the clue. While traditional planning perspective in strategic management has limitations, an alternative view on strategy making, as dubbed 'Emergent School' in this study, can provide some explannations. The case of Asan Chung Ju Yung offers an important insight in line with this alternative perspective as he replicated successful strategic decision making under extreme uncertainties.
